In One hour –> His Holiness the Dalai Lama will speak as part of an effort with USIP to strengthen the role of young leaders in ending the world’s violent conflicts, which are concentrated in countries with large youth populations. The U.N. Security Council, among other institutions, has recognized the urgency of putting youth at the forefront of peace processes, and the wider “peacebuildilng” campaigns for cultural understanding and social justice.
The Dalai Lama’s visit follows a recent dialogue on this issue convened by USIP at his residence in Dharamsala, India, with 28 youth civil society leaders from countries facing violent extremism. In that exchange, which Washington Post columnist Michael Gerson called “a singular event,” the Dalai Lama discussed ways to use universal spiritual values, such as compassion, in transforming violent conflicts into peaceful dialogue.
